Lisa Campbell:

Welcome to the Politics and Poetry podcast. An idea created during our recent political campaign. I'm Lisa Campbell, former candidate for the Georgia General Assembly. I'll be joined by friends, family -- three generations in fact -- and other spirited politicians and poets, for what we hope will become your new bi-monthly discussion about the nexus of politics and poetry.

Lexi Hunter:

What is our personal place in politics and poetry?

Ron Campbell:

Can we opt out of our role as political citizens?

Lexi Hunter:

Can we tune out the poetry in our own political conversations?

Ron Campbell:

What happens if we do opt out?

Lexi Hunter:

What happens if we don't? Instead, what if we immerse ourselves in ideals, ideas, and actions for the common shared good.

Ron Campbell:

We believe these concepts are essential to understanding the meaning of active citizenship. People sometimes seem to disconnect from politics because understanding the legislation and issues can seem unattainable. The same is often said of poetry. Also, the issues can be sensitive, emotional, personal, or even painful. Poetry often serves as a bridge, helping us connect life's practical issues and hard questions with our human emotion and purpose.

Lexi Hunter:

Our mission is to uncover the power unleashed in the synergy of politics and poetry. We hope that by exploring human emotions, through lyrics and verse, this might help renew our commitment to political involvement, and rekindle a common language to communicate more deeply with one another.

Lisa Campbell:

From current activists and politicians like Joe Biden, Stacey Abrams, Jen Jordan, and Jimmy Carter, to poets like Emily Dickinson, Seamus Heaney, Mary Oliver, and Naomi Shihab Nye, we'll be exploring the connection between individuals who share a passion for the written word and political action. Join us as we spark conversations and thoughts about politics and poetry while amplifying the lyrics, the words, the passion, and the people who create them. Balance your political discourse with an energetic look at the interplay between the moments of poetry in our activism, our legislation, our political movements, and our lives.
